| History of Burgh House Including an explanation of the name There has been a house on the site of Burgh House for many years, though the current construction commenced in the 1990s. The original building is shown on the 1:25,000 St. Helena map as highlighted below.
The current building was completed in 2005 and occupied by the Turner Family, who remain in residence. Why ‘Burgh House’?The word Burgh is Scottish. A Burgh was an autonomous corporate entity in Scotland, usually a town. The word itself derives from the Germanic languages and means "to keep, save, make secure" (Source: Wikipedia). However, Burgh House was specifically named from Burgh Island, just off the coast of South Devon in the UK. The first occupiers of the current building were married there, in the fabulous art-deco Burgh Island Hotel. The picture below shows the island and the hotel.
